Mother’s Day Classic

13 05 2009

Mother’s Day Classic is an annual event held all over Australia in conjunction with Mother’s Day on 10th of May. It is basically a run/walk charity event to support breast cancer research and on this year in Melbourne, it was last Sunday.

It was a beautiful day; despite the gloomy weather that seems to colour the sky lately. Well, a perfect day for a perfect cause! There was an overwhelming support; the track was jammed with 33,000 runners and walkers – who joined for different reasons. Most of them participate to show support for friends and family who suffers from breast cancer, with their love expressed on the tribute card worn on the back of shirts. I for one – although no close acquaintance of mine has suffered from breast cancer (alhamdulillah)- joined for many reasons – to get fit, to practice some shootings and to support the cause; being a researcher in the cancer field itself.

As for the fitness, the 4km walk which took approximately an hour is no hard a task for me, for I am used to walking 20 minutes everyday to and fro the lab. As far as the shooting goes, I am quite disappointed with myself, for the outputs are not as good as I hope it would be – though I cannot blame the very bright sunshine, only myself for not doing some homework, or trying hard enough, or applying what people has advised me to do on such situation. But it all pays up by meeting some exciting new friends and feeling good about myself for supporting the very good cause.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths among women in Malaysia, with about one in 19 women in this country are at risk. The risk of developing breast cancer increased with age, family history, early menstruation or late menopause, giving birth after the age of 30, not having breast fed and high-fat and low fibre diet; to name a few. As scary as it might sound, breast cancer is potentially curable disease if detected early, thus the importance of breast self-examination. For women aged 35 and below, breast self-examination should be done once a month, between the seventh and tenth day after the start of menstruation. Learn more here.

Well, spread the word around, have a healthy life style and yeah, enjoy the not-so pictures :) .
